Understanding Career Choice of Business Students 1

This research considers the role of values, family and non-family influences on career choice, and career goals among MBA students. Data were collected from 109 MBA students in the first semester of their MBA program. Males and females were almost equally represented. Most respondents aspired to careers, not jobs, or callings. There were few gender differences in this sample. Neither family nor non-family influences predicted career outcomes, indicative of the independent-self among the students. Predictor variables generally accounted for modest variance on most career outcomes suggesting complexity of the career choice process.
